As the end of summer approaches, it won’t be long until the leaves change and the temperatures drop to crisp sweater weather. With it will come all of the autumn delights: Halloween, pumpkin spice everything, leaf piles, and Thanksgiving. Autumn’s almost here, but there’s still time to pump the last bit of fun out of Summer.
To bid Summer adieu, we’ve assembled a fun walking tour of one of Pittsburgh’s quietest, quaintest neighborhoods: Regent Square.
Your Walking Tour of Regent Square
Before we get started, here’s some important information to know:
Some of our tour will pass through Frick Park. Wear a good pair of walking shoes!
The tour is about 2.5 miles long. If you have small children, you may want to bring a stroller.
Start: Biddle’s Escape (401 Biddle Avenue)
To start your adventure, find a parking spot near 401 Biddle Avenue, near the northeast corner of Regent Square. The tour begins in Biddle’s Escape, a neighborhood hotspot where you can fuel up on artisanal coffee and tea (both hot and cold) and even a few sweet pastries. While you’re there, soak in the fun artwork both inside and outside of Biddle’s Escape.
Don’t forget to look across Biddle Avenue at the house on the corner of Biddle Avenue and South Trenton Avenue. This beautiful home often has fun artwork in the yard.
Next: Head West (Toward S Braddock Avenue)
Regent Square is known for its quiet tree-lined streets. Enjoy the neighborhood and stretch your legs by heading west on Biddle Avenue toward South Braddock Avenue.
Other things to look for along the way:
A neighborhood Little Free Library on the 300 block of Biddle Avenue.
Multiple architectural styles spanning decades and countries.
Next: Head South on S Braddock Avenue
As the main artery running through Regent Square, S Braddock Avenue is one of the neighborhood’s busiest streets. With its beautiful yards and gorgeous houses, it’s also one of its prettiest. Take it all in as you head toward Regent Square’s busiest economic area.
Next: Spend Time on the 1000 and 1100 Blocks of S Braddock Avenue
Most of Regent Square’s businesses are compressed into the 1000 and 1100 blocks of S Braddock Avenue. Feel free to wander around!
Some points of interest:
Regent Square Theatre. Known for its art films and art galleries, Regent Square Theatre is a great place to experience culture you won’t find many other places. If you need a break from the sun (or you’re in the mood for some art) head inside!
Eateries. You’ll find something for everyone in this section of town. Breakfast food (Square Cafe and 61B Cafe), Thai (Thai Cottage), gourmet hot dogs (D’s Six Pax and Dogz)—it’s all here.
Next: Continue South to Allenby Avenue
For the next leg of the trip, we’re taking you off the sidewalk and into the forest of Frick Park. To get to the park, continue down S Braddock Avenue toward Route 376 until you reach Allenby Avenue. Follow Allenby Avenue and the old brick-line train tracks to the end of the street.
Next: Follow Braddock Trail
Jump onto Braddock Trail at the end of Allenby Avenue. Keep to the right while you’re enjoying the cool shade and tall trees. The trail will wrap along the west side of Regent Square, taking you over Frick Lane. Continue north until you reach the Frick Park Biddle Building and parking lot.
Next: Travel North on S Braddock Avenue
Our walking tour is almost over! Head to the intersection of S Braddock Avenue and Forbes Avenue. Once there, you have two great destinations for kids:
The Forbes and Braddock Playground
Park Pizza and Ice Cream (7600 Forbes Avenue)
Take some time to rest with a sweet or savory treat, or continue on to the next part of the journey.
Next: Follow Forbes Avenue East to Green Street
Walk east along Forbes Avenue until you reach the fork in the road. Follow Forbes Avenue to the right, and you’ll find yourself on Green Street.
End: Follow Virgil Way to S Trenton Avenue
From Green Street, turn south onto Virgil Way. Virgil Way ends on Union Street. A quick turn east on Union Street will take you to S Trenton Avenue. Follow Trenton Avenue back to Biddle’s Escape (and your vehicle!).
