History of Swissvale

Swissvale was founded more than 100 years ago on July 30, 1898. If you could go back to that date in history, you’d encounter a landscape much different from the quiet Pittsburgh residential neighborhood we know today. In the 1800s, the land that is now Swissvale was a quaint landscape of farms, orchards, and bountiful fields of grain.

Its name comes from writer, slavery abolitionist, and Underground Railroad promoter Jane Grey Swisshelm, whose father-in-law, John Swisshlem, fought in the Revolutionary War under George Washington. Swisshelm Park, which lies west of Swissvale, is named after him.

Located nine miles from Downtown Pittsburgh, Swissvale is bordered by Edgewood to the north, Braddock Hills and Braddock to the east, Rankin to the south, and Regent Square and Swisshelm Park to the west.
