Regent Square - Braddock Avenue

History of Regent Square

Tucked along the eastern edge of Pittsburgh, Regent Square often generates confusion among locals because it’s actually part of four different municipalities: Edgewood, Pittsburgh, Swissvale, and Wilkinsburg. Despite the unusual divisions, Regent Square is a nationally ranked neighborhood, hitting one of the country’s top 20 neighborhoods in 2018, according to Niche.

Regent Square’s appeal is largely because of its community-focused design. Tree-lined streets and front porches that sit close to the sidewalk make Regent Square a quaint, friendly neighborhood. Combine the neighborhood’s active Civic Association, and you have a vibrant community.

Regent Square has passed through many hands over the years, but it didn’t get its current name until the area was acquired by William E. Harmon in 1919, back when it was known as Devon place. Harmon originally called it Regent Place, but that eventually evolved into Regent Square.

Like many neighborhoods in eastern Pittsburgh, used to have a large population of Westinghouse employees. At one time, George Westinghouse himself had a small farm in the area, and encouraged his managers to build homes nearby because of its proximity to his factories.
